A clot (thrombus) or portion of a clot that has dislodged, traveled through the bloodstream, and obstructed a blood vessel in another site. An example would be a pulmonary embolism (PE), which is a thrombus that originated elsewhere in the body, dislodged, and then obstructed a blood vessel in a lung.
